Clary Rose Pottery is the mother-daughter team of Katherine and Monica Chaplin. They have been working together since 2012 to create artful, utilitarian ceramics produced in their hand-built cob studio in Scott Valley.
Both Katherine and Monica have been inspired by ancient traditions such as the Santa Clara style of handmade utilitarian and ceremonial vessels. Many of the ideas for the hand-painted designs that decorate their work come from local wildlife scenes, ancient cave paintings, and indigenous pottery examples.
Clary Rose Pottery is based on the model of an artist collective where multiple artists can share workloads and resources. Sharing the work has been a great benefit for this mother-daughter duo. They divide the work based on physical and artistic ability and overall art aesthetic.

I began my love of ceramics in a small-town high school ceramics class. I had an excellent teacher who inspired many people toward a career in ceramics. I went on to get a minor in art at San Diego State University. I am currently interested in creating hand-built kitchenware ceramics and tiles with hand-painted scenes of local wildlife,

My love of pottery started in a rural, small-town high school in Northwest Washington State. It only takes one amazing teacher to inspire a student for the rest of their lives. I had several. My love of pottery started in a rural, small-town high school in Northwest Washington State. It only takes one amazing teacher to inspire a student for the rest of their lives. I had several. One was a ceramics teacher, and my current passion is due to her openness to student creativity and exuberance. I also worked with Shawn Kinney at College of the Siskiyous in Weed, who encouraged me to take the next step to becoming a potter, which was to study ceramics at Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland. Since 2006, I have been building skills at my studio in Scott Valley. My work has been inspired by the craft of Maria Martinez and Southwest pottery, by the colors and forms of Alphonse Mucha’s Art Nouveau masterpieces, and the magnificent and compelling Cave Art drawings from the south of France. My work is always evolving, but I abide by the rule of a potter: If you can’t utilize it, it had better be the most fantastic sculpture you've ever made. If you connect with one of my pieces, please hold it in your hands carefully.
